Lismore : lismore visitor guide
tucked away in the hills 30kms north of Lismore, Nimbin was once a sleepy little dairying village in a lush setting of farmland and forest. Today, Nimbin is known the world over as Australia’s most famous hippie destination and alternative lifestyle capital. Nimbin shot to fame when it hosted the 1973 Aquarius Festival, attracting students, hippies and visionaries from all over Australia. Once the bands left and the dust settled, a few intrepid souls stayed on to live the dreams and ideology of Aquarius and sow the seeds for today’s vibrant, sustainable community. This internationally famous village is intriguing and quirky with its unique mural streetscape of indigenous, rainforest and psychedelic facades and colourful local characters. With an amazing array of cafés and shops and the extraordinary Nimbin Museum, the village also features fascinating places like Djanbung Permaculture Gardens, Rainbow Power Company and the Nimbin Candle Factory. Nimbin is the perfect place to stay, to relax, rejuvenate and let Mother Nature work her charms. You can stay in a luxurious cabin on the edge of the rainforest, in a B&B or backpackers, or perhaps in a teepee with spectacular mountain views. cullen street The colour ful shopfront murals along Cullen St create the perfect backdrop for the daily show of unscripted theatre. There are plenty of places to browse, craft shops, galleries, retail outlets, or just sit back, enjoy a meal or coffee and watch the passing parade. nimbin rocks The towering Nimbin Rocks are estimated to be 20 million years old and are of great significance to the traditional owners from the Bundjalung nation. While this sacred site has restricted access, you can check them out from the viewing area 3kms south of the village. djanbung gardens permaculture centre Djanbung Gardens is a living ‘learnscape’ of working permaculture systems and sustainability in action.
